THE HAMPDEN Post
Office is now open for
service. Located in the
community of Bounty Hall in
Trelawny, the post office serves
both communities as well as surrounding areas. Member
of Parliament for
Northern Trelawny, Dr Patrick
Harris, had established the major
components of the building, and
COMPLANT, the Chinese construction
firm responsible for erecting the nearby Trelawny multi-purpose
stadium, completed
the structure and did all finishing work as a gift to
the community.

THE CARIBBEAN Postal Union (CPU), which was established in St. Lucia on
September 5, 1996, is a restricted
union of the Universal Postal
Union (UPU). It was developed by Caribbean nations to promote
international
postal cooperation in the spirit and observance of the acts
of the UPU;
improve the response to
customers’ requirements for postal
facilities of all kinds; facilitate the
improvement and security of
postal services; and coordinate postal training arrangements
and postal operational services.
Cruise sector will sail
away with Cup benefits
CASTRIES, St. Lucia (CMC):
A LEADING Barbadian hotelier has warned that Caribbean countries
will
lose out on the benefits from the
2007 Cricket World Cup to the
cruise shipping industry.
Ralph Taylor, chairman of the
Barbados hotel chain, Almond Resorts, said that the cruise
sector was positioned to sail away with
the benefits from the event with the announcement that regional
organisers
will be chartering 14 cruise ships to accommodate some 20,000 visitors.

Michael Gentles is now Jamaica's postmaster general.
His appointment took effect on August 1, and he will also serve as chief executive
officer (CEO) of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica (Post Corp), a private company
owned by the Government created to advance the pace of postal service modernisation.
Christmas
mail plans under way

JAMAICA, A member-state of
the Caribbean Postal Union
(CPU), will once again be integrated into the Christmas airmail
initiative coordinated with
the United States Postal Service
(USPS). The pro-active approach is
in reference to the anticipated
increase in mail volume during the
holiday season.
Postmaster General/CEO Michael
Gentles is scheduled to attend the preliminary round of negotiations
in Miami this week. Last year, CPU
officials were deployed overseas to accelerate the processing
and transfer
between airlines, as well as to effectively resolve irregularities
that may
have arisen.

Service Commission of Mr. Michael Gentles as Postmaster

Mr. Gentles will also serve as Chief Executive Officer
of The Postal Corporation of Jamaica.

cards and bill payment services are now available at
the recently opened Grant’s Pen post office. This
new postal outlet is part of the Community Policing and
Service Centre, located at 35 Grant’s Pen Road.
The
postmaster at Grant’s Pen post office, Ms Gweneth
Edwards, welcomes customers when they come to top-up
their cellular phone credit or access other phone calling
card systems using Cool Card’s e-card voucher system.
Also available is the Paymaster bill payment facility
to ensure that services are not disconnected.

Health Fair a success

The large turnout of citizens to the Central Sorting
Office’s
health fair is a credit to its success.
The event, held last December in the car park at the
postal service’s headquarters, was sponsored by
private sector entities.
It established how appreciative community members were
of efforts to encourage harmony among persons from different
areas, as everyone enjoyed the displays, entertainment
and the jovial vibe.

Jamaica
Post now has a credit card payment facility. It is designed
to expedite the payment process for Corporate Mailroom Service
customers whose postage payments have either been in cash
or Manager’s Cheque. Naturally,
it also provides an easier alternative for other customers
to make faster postage stamp payments.

as part of the new civic centre comprising the ‘Model Community Policing and Services Centre’ and ‘Edna
Manley Health Centre’ at 35 Grants Pen Road, is to be opened on January
24, 2006, as part of the official ceremony for the complex.

Postal service boss elected to

The Gleaner Following the election at the recently
concluded 10th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Postal
Union (CPU) held in St Vincent from June 12 to 16, Jamaica’s
Acting Postmaster General/CEO, Michael Gentles, was elected
to the chair of Secretary General of the CPU. He will
continue to be based in Jamaica for the duration of the
two year term of office.

Computers from UK to bolster staff training

grateful!” That was the sentiment
expressed by the Acting Postmaster General, Michael Gentles,
upon having been recently presented with 104 complete reconditioned
computers for the use of the Post and Telecommunications
Department (P&T).
Release
of Battle of Trafalgar Stamps
Six postage stamps and a souvenir sheet will be released on Wednesday June 23,
2005, as part 1 of a 2 part series, by the Government of Jamaica through the
Postmaster General, to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
The series
is released in Jamaican dollar denominations of
$20, $30, $50, $60, $70 and $90. Sheetlets will
be sold for $200. First Day Covers with stamps
will be sold for $450, and with souvenir sheets
for $330.
