MP donates bicycles to Portmore post office
Based on discussions with the community citizens’ action
group in the Greater Portmore area, Member of Parliament
Fitz Jackson took the initiative to purchase bicycles
for the Post Office that serves a major section of his
South St Catherine constituency.
The Postmaster at Greater Portmore Post Office, Ms Cynthia
Griffiths, is pleased to be able to resume quality mail
delivery service to the area. Citizens have sought to have
the cherished mail service more consistently and therefore,
through the community group, were able to have the intervention
of the Hon Minister who donated the bicycles.
At a brief ceremony held at that Post Office on Thursday
August 10, 2006, Hon Fitz Jackson formally presented the
bicycles to the Postal Service, stating that he recognises
the value of citizens’ groups in fostering a means
to solving problems within communities. He added that the
bicycles’ purchase is one aspect in his involvement
with the Post and Telecommunication Department, as based
on the variety of needs outlined to him, much more needs
to be done.
In this respect, he gave his assurance that specific projects
will be undertaken through his constituency office and
that these are to be completed before the end of this year.
Mr Jackson commended Mrs Sandra Senior-Brown, Jamaica
Post’s Personnel Director, who was instrumental in
following up this project to completion, for her dedicated
community service.
Speaking on behalf of the Postmaster General, Ms Monica
Dunkley, Acting Regional Manager, Spanish Town, expressed
appreciation for this gesture and suggested that the Minister
may be able to influence his colleagues in Parliament to
simulate this support for Post Offices in their communities.
She assured the Minister that the staff will care the bicycles
and that this additional equipment “will truly enhance
the timely and effective delivery of mail in the Greater
Portmore area.”
Customer Advisory:
UK Mail Delays Expected
As local post office customers are by now aware, there
is a heightened level of security at all United Kingdom
airports. Mail service delays will arise from the proactive
stance taken by security teams.
We will issue an update as more information becomes available.
…In Israel, Lebanon too
Based on the month-old military conflict between Israel
and its northern neighbour Lebanon, mail delays that have
been experienced are expected to continue until further
notice.
