Damaged Mail: Causes & Solutions
Mail items do at times get damaged in transit. This happens for a variety of reasons, the primary causes being unsuitable encasement and inadequate packaging.

INAPROPRIATE PACKAGING
Inappropriate packaging can result in damage to your item. Sometimes packaging is of poor quality. How? Take this example: an envelope that is used for a letter cannot possibly be effective for packaging a pair of eyeglasses, can it? If you choose to send the glasses through the post in that envelope, the recipient will definitely be disappointed, agreed? Unfortunately, the postal service is blamed for the damaged item, rather than the sender.

To minimise the risk of this happening to you, please follow our packaging advice: avoid using flimsy containers- use the most suitable packaging material and ensure that all spaces are filled to avoid the content’s movement within the package.

WEATHER DAMAGE
A range of safeguards are in place to prevent weather damage, but it is possible that during the transfer from mail hub, postal outlet and mail van, mail bags may be exposed to the elements. Mail movement does not stop because of ‘bad weather’.

This is especially applicable to overseas locations that experience more severe changes in weather than that in Jamaica. Such adverse weather conditions can sometimes cause damage, as the change in climatic conditions may cause condensation in mail bags. If your mail repeatedly arrives apparently damaged from rain, please let us know so that we may try to prevent its recurrence.

WAS MY MAIL OPENED?
If it looks as if your mail has been opened, this may be due to machine damage. In many countries, machines are used to sort mail and this can result in your mail being damaged, as the item may get stuck in the equipment, or a moving part rubs or rips the package. Locally, machines are used to cancel the stamps on envelopes and small packets. Mail recipients are encouraged to check if anything is missing.
We take the security of your mail seriously so please let us know if you think your mail has been tampered with. The process for reporting a damaged item may include an inspection. We therefore ask that you keep the envelope or packaging, as it may be needed during our investigation.

The Jamaica Post team assures the nation that we do all we can to ensure that your deliveries are secure. If something is wrong, please contact us.
